PAUL and SARA OSMOND had their BABY!!!!

We'll Paulie Osmond is a DAD!!! and man... she is a Cutie... I'm guessing the Osmond Household is pretty busy with visitors and so on.. so here is the latest info from Paul himself..

Just a quick update on Abigail and Mom.

Both are doing well. Abigail is doing well and she almost done with the addition oxygen requirement. The air we breathe has 21% oxygen and the air in her incubator is about 22.9% oxygen right now. She started at 62% so things have gotten much better.

She has been sleeping and eating well and she had her iv taken out today. On Saturday she was able to come out of the isolette for a special hug from her Mom & Dad! She is really active stretching and moving around in her little room! We can notice changes with her every day!

Sara was discharged from the hospital last Friday and had her first night sleeping at home in 16 days! Had a post-op appointment on Saturday morning and all is well. She is feeling much better and looks awesome! She has been busy pumping meals for the baby and has been actively changing diapers and burping the baby!

We'll try and follow-up with some phone calls whenever we are home but for the next while that will be very rare. We will keep everyone update via email with pics and updates. Hope all is well with everyone!

Paul, Sara & Abigail :)

I hope Paul and Sara are ok with me posting this.... Sara and baby are looking great! and were all very excited for them..

Maybe now they'll stop making fun of me for driving a Mini-van!!!!

STILBITE... the Rock of Nova Scotia

Ok... its official... the new band has a NAME and a logo.

While I'd love to take credit for the name and/or the logo, both spawn from the research and computer skills of guitarist Steve Fury...

Pronounced "Still-Bite" there actually is a ROCK Native to the province of of Nova Scotia Called Stilbite... (hey if you dont believe me, look it up... http://www3.sympatico.ca/goweezer/canada/embNS.htm )

Anyway... We hope to have a website up and running soon... Maybe eventually with Sound clips... but that will take time... We've secured the domain ( www.stilbite.ca) thanks again to Steve, but for now.. theres nothing there yet ..... We'll build the site later....

Cheers for now...

the COMMITMENTS at the Casino

I think the Casino has been one of Halifax's best kept secrets... they have had a lot of great acts ther over the last couple of years...

We went to the Bee Gees and Abba rip-off... it sounded good... and I was acutally impressed until I realized that 75% of what you heard was actually Pre-recorded.. and they were Lip-sync-ing much of it.. and fake playing the instruments... Not all.. but a lot...

Anyway.. I wont rant about that...

but I was a Huge Fan of the Commitments Movie... So I just HAD to go when I heard they were playing here..

My Buddy Scott Cheverie went with me.. and it was great....

The band actually only has a couple of the Movie members.. but man..... they were Great!!!!

You could tell they were on the last night of a very LONG tour... But man.. they were still Awesome... I'd definately go see these guys again... So good that you didnt even mind it that it wasn't the whole "Movie" version of the group.....

I even Hung around at the end to get my picture taken with the

band....

What can I say..... ok.. I'm a Geek!!!

South Park & Lord of the Rings

How do you Like "SOUTH PARK ROB"

ha ha ... Gilroy showed me how to make these......

anyway..... I need help folks.... I'm trying to track down a video...

Does ANYONE have a copy of the South Park epsode where they play Lord of the Rings... and go on a "quest" to return the Movie?????

if so... Can I PLEASE BORROW IT!!!!

I caught part of late one night after band practice and almost pissed myself laughing....

Classic Classic Stuff.....

Me At band Practice!!!! lol

New band Needs a NAME

Ok folks... We got a new band in the works....

One of my fav pasttimes at home is cranking the Surround Sound with a Concert DVD and Just Closing my eyes and Listening... and I really think there are others out there just like me!! So why not a band that cators to THAT niche!!!!!!

Music you love... but Maybe you cant dance to it....

there will be NO songs like Brown eye'd Girl, Old time Rock n Roll, and Sweet Home Alabama..... in this band... Personally, I'd rather eat a warm cup of hamster Vomit then to EVER play those tunes (and there are others) again...

Any musicians out there can relate... Im sure..

Instead of playing the old stadard tunes like the ones I just mentioned... this band is gonna tackle stuff like ... Into the mystic, Against the Wind and I know a little.. by the same artists.... also chuck in some Boston (Foreplay/Longtime) Pink Floyd (Shine on Crazy Diamond, or Time, complete with Intro and sound effects) Deep Purple. (Lazy, or Maybe Im a leo) and so on.... and so on.........

Sure, you can't dance to most of that stuff... But Who else out there is playing it.... NO ONE.. and these are tunes WE ALL LOVE to hear... well.. ok, maybe not everyone... but a lot of people...

I call it the "Bongwater" effect.. where you can just zone out into the music.. the Music becomes like a Drug that just takes you...

I'll admit... there are nay-sayers do have a point... its most likely that we'll never play the liqour Dome or Palace playing that kind of stuff.. and thats true...it will be hard to get paying gigs with that style of music.... But I dont care.... this is just for the Pure JOY of music...

I think with tunes like theses.. .. we'd initialy be relegated to the House parties... and/or B-list bars... BUT i think we'd quickly build a Loyal Following of Music Lovers... and would then gain some real frigging Momentum....

personally, I'd rather play to a half full bar of people who came just to see the band.. then capacity crowd that would have come anyway.. and halfway through some little tart comes up and says "Um, excuse me.. but do you know when is the DJ gonna start anyway?" arrrgggg!!!!! theres nothing worst......

Anyway... to get to the point...

We Got a band now..

6 guys (and maybe a lady singer as well for a total of 7) and Things are coming together really well...

All guys who have Jobs/families... which come first.. but also LOVE music.. and are not in this for cash-money-dance-gigs..... We just want to play COOL tunes we love...

Anyway... We got 9 tunes Down so far...

Time (Pink Floyd)
Carry on Wayward Son (Kansas)
Hold the Line (Toto)
Faithfully
Don't Stop
Loving touching Squezzing
Any way you want it (Journey)
Feels Like the First Time (Foreigner)

And were now working on
Bon Jovi, Bad Medicine,
White Snake,Gimmie all your Love
Van Morrison, Into the mystic (more the Colin james version)
Joe Cocker, Feeling allright
Van Halen, Aint Talkin Bout Love
Queen, Tie your Mother Down
Toto, Rosanna
and some other really cool stuff...

I thought.. In keeping with the Whole theme of Music being like a drug.. but better... that "Bongwater" would be a cool name.. (Hence the Blog's name) but its still not decided...

I also loved the movie "Almost famous" in which the feature band was called StillWater (another cool name)

Of course, there's a potential negative connotation.. But if bands like Third Eye Blind, Finger Eleven, Doobie Bros, and Barenaked ladies worked out well..... Why not Bong water??

Another idea that was floated was "Laid Back Citizens" which I also think is cool... but were open to Suggestions...

If you have any... PLEASE Let me know..

In the meantime.. ... when we get a gig.. I'll let ya know...

untill then.. Check out our singers old site... and the clips of his original stuff......

http://www.intermediamusic.com/clips.htm

Cheers....

Austrialian Pink Floyd

Another overdue one...

This Page is slowly turning in to a Concert Review Blog?? oh well...I'll role with it... what the heck...

these guys have been to halifax TWICE!!!! I saw them Last year.. but had to post something to give Kudos to them... they were that good... Especially since I just crapped all over INXS (I took heat for that one)

I can't stress this enough... if your lucky enouh to have the Ausie Pink Floyd come to where you are.... SEE IT... if not... take a BUSS or a Plane or hitch hike to go see this show... Well worth it..

Bar none, the best Live Sound I've heard in Halifax EVER.... and thats a Hard Arena to Mix..... It was incredible...

I went with a bunch of musicians.. who are Pink Floyd Fanatics.... so you know they were gonna be critical.....

Well, we didn't expect much..Im mean.. we thought... How good can they really be... they are a cover band..... . but Boy... We were AMAZED beyond belief... One word... Speechless...

When they Did "Great Gig in the Sky"... I got Goose Pimples....
I think Glenn Drooled, and I'm pretty sure Shawn and Eric cried a little bit.... (ha ha) but seriously... It was that good..... .

http://www.aussiefloyd.com/

Were gonna tackle "Time" and "Money" in our new band.. (from dark side) I'm trying to talk the boys into doing gig in the sky as well.. A little DS tribute, if you will... I'm pretty sure wayne can hit the notes.... but we'll see how things go once we get a full set list of tunes.....

Anyway.... Check out the Ausie site...,
Some cool Downloads......

I'm tired.. so I do need to cut this one short.. but I can't say enough great things about this show....

Anyway... No more concerts for me till July....

Willie Nelson

Well.. Im a huge Willie fan.. Wish I could have seen the Highway men back in the day... but i didnt...

Nitty Gritty Dirt band opend for Willie... and they were incredible...

and While Willie was good (didnt realize he was that great a guitar player) it wasn't what I expected...

There wasn't a full drum kit... just a dude with a snare and brushes... Not unlike that old Elvis "One nite with you" special he did for TV back in the day....

Anyway.. it was cool to see Willie... But man.. after INXS last night, and the week I've had... I have to admit I Bailed early to come home and get some sleep....

Speaking of sleep... what the heck am I doing typing this blah blah bla.........................

Sarah's First Ice Cream Cone!

15 Months old!!!

Aint this the Cutest....

Ok... call me Bias... but I think she's amazing...

Of course... this is my daughter, Sarah Marie Crewe.....

Almost Famous

ALMOST FAMOUS

Idea for Music Oriented Reality TV show
By Rob Crewe
Title pending copy write approval from movie of same name.

Picture: Ducats, circa 1960's

In the 1960’s my father was in one of the hottest bands in Canada. They were touring a week behind the Stampeders and drawing significantly larger crowds. They Mingled with Little Richard, Bill Halley, Johnny and the Hurricanes, and Harry Bellefonte, performed with Leslie Gore, and actually got signed to the pre-Motown label, Smash Records

Things were about to get Really Big for them.
(Pic right: Ducats with Leslie Gore)

The Stampeders had taken a sabbatical, retiring back to the Prairies, and my dad’s band, the Ducats, were about to be the First Canadian, and ALL Newfoundland Band to be signed to the Motown label.. But, blame it on their youthful ignorance, in short… they got thrown out and the deal never happened, and you’ve likely never heard of them until now.
A short time later Trudeau enacted the Canadian Content Law requiring Canadian Stations to play a certain Minimum of Canadian Bands. With a scarcity of good recorded Canadian Music, the Ducats had missed their Golden opportunity. They split up, moved back to various parts of Newfoundland, started careers and families. Meanwhile, the Stampeders got back together and went on to experience significant success in Canada. I can only image how things “could have been” for my dad’s band had things been different

(Pic Above Left: Ducats' Guitarist, Lew Skinner with Scotty Moore of Elvis fame)
I can't remember all the names of the people involved.... and its not often you'll get my dad to talk about it.. But there were two brothers, Molten and Karl Yakus who believe were producers (I've likely Miss-spelled that) Larry Jaspen i think was an agent ? and Joseph Rensitti I believe was the Big Wig. Rensiti had interviewed the Ducats singer, Claude Caines, at the end.. even flew him from Boston to New Your I think, and he (Joseph) was going to give them a song he'd written to record...
any way... it never happend.... but Most of these other guys are still in the industry... and the Ducats faded to music history's dustbin...
The singer, Claude, later went on to sing in Garrison Hill, which also featured Brian McLeod of Chilliwack fame... the rest have been still in music, but purely on a minor league level..... Nothing would ever come close to where they were in the 60's

I love telling that story. I tell a significantly longer version of it every time I meet a fellow musician or a music fan. I believe that people genuinely love to hear it to, and more often then not, once I’ve finished it, they have a similar story about another band they knew that “Almost” made it… and I love hearing those stories as well.. Many of them are even Cooler then the story of my dad's old group... ..

I guess the point is that I just Love music. Everything about it. I love to play it, listen to it, going to concerts, bugging sales people at music stores, even just talking about it with other musicians and fans. It’s a passion, bordering on addiction. I can’t count how many other musicians I’ve meet who feel the same way and there are even more people who can’t play a note, but still share the same enthusiasm. We love the success stories, but we also love to hear about the “almost” stories, and even the “I knew a guy whose roommate used to be a roadie for Loverboy’s 1986 tour.” We relish in these stories, and can’t wait to repeat them.

I think that’s possibly why most musicians love to hate these new Idol shows…. We’re bitter that these kids have an express ticket to what so many of us tried so hard to achieve and couldn’t. Having said that, however, if you probe a little deeper you’ll find that we really don’t hate these shows… we’re just really jealous. We’d rather hear about the struggles, the underdog, the band who slept in their cars before making it big, and even about the ones who made the sacrifices and didn’t make it. We can relate, sympathize and commiserate.

To get to the point, while there are a lot of established bands that I love, I’ve always believed that some of the world’s best musicians and songs out there, we’ve never heard and likely never will. I really believe that it’s not an industry where the best necessarily rise to the top.. It’s about talent, and hard work, sure, of course.. But those two qualities do not guarantee success. Much of it is about Timing, Luck, and of course, marketing.

So if most of us know and accept that, what if there was a TV show, a “rock-u-mentary”, that celebrated these unsung heroes. Not just my Dads former band, but other bands from across North America that were also “Almost Famous”.

Each show would start with a brief biography of the featured band by the shows host, complete with pictures from the era, with that particular group’s music providing the background. Then we’d cut to the band members, and interview them about some of the more interesting highlights of their musical journey. For collaboration, we’d also interview bar owners, patrons, fans and industry executives, and/or (for some Star Power) where possible, actual famous musicians and/or actors who may have played with them, heard them, and/or who may have had any contact with them. We could show clips from any available video from the era, especially video of the band in action.

In some cases, band members may have gone on to other bands and are still playing today. Where possible, they could be featured briefly in addition to a short “where are they now” section. Where possible, we’d also reunite the members for an arranged gig, fill the venue with fans and extras, and get the whole thing on film. The Intent would not necessarily be to finally give these guys their break, as in many cases it would likely be too late, or commercially unviable, (although stranger things have happened). Alternatively, the intent would be largely to just pay some respect to these unsung heroes, and, essentially… Give them their 15 minutes in the spotlight..

The second half of the show could then move on to focus on a new underdog. A low to mid level band, struggling with bar owners, and promoters. Maybe they are couch surfing as they’ve no money for actual rent. We could show just how hard it actually is to really make it, and how passionately people pursue these dreams. This feature would focus on a working unsigned act, and/or alternatively, could also spotlight a newly signed act that is still struggling to find an audience.(This could facilitate an Industry Sponsor) In that regard, it could also serve as a means to increase their exposure to the mass public and to help them to earn respect for how hard they are really tying to make it work. We could feature them in their home town, or alternatively, document their experiences of life on the road.

Then, to occasionally add some contrast and drawing power, find established acts willing to be featured on the show, and spend a few days on the road with them, and ask them to talk about their struggles before making it big and how things are different now. If and where it connects, we’d try to tie these stories back to the “Almost Famous” act, but if not, maybe at the very least, facilitate an introduction of that weeks featured underdog, to the established act, get them free T-shirts, back stage passes, etc. We could also, occasionally interview Industry Executives for some behind the scenes secrets revealed of how the industry really works. And not necessarily the Famous promotors... But the silent hero's of the Industry... the Donald Tarltons, the Barry Garbers... and so on...

Initially, I can think of at least four or five acts from Atlantic Canada (Im from there) that would be good candidates but I’m open to global ideas.

Of course my Dads band “ The Ducats”, Then there’s Pepper-tree, from Nova Scotia in the 70’s, The Bourbon Tabernacle Choir who I think are from Ontario, Jon Matheson, from right here in Halifax, and Wayne Smart from Lachute Quebec to name just a few.

We could set up a website, and invite the public to email us their stories of their favorite “almost famous” stories, and we’d pick the most interesting among them. I think the emails will poor in from both the musicians and fans, and the range of content and music styles will be never ending.

For authenticity, the hosts would have to be musicians themselves. Perhaps a
collection of two or more has-beens or Almost Was’s. You’d have the straight laced suit and tie type, who used to be a rocker (OK, thats a shameless effort to get my self a job on this project see pic right), you'd of course had to add the harder edged long hair hippie who never gave up the dream, despite the lack of any real success in music, and maybe one or two others in the middle of those two extremes. This diversity would be key as while they may bicker, and argue, the Music would always unit them… (I have a few candidates in mind for each role already) It would be light hearted, and fun.

They could travel North America with the film crew on an Authentic 70’s style tour bus, complete with working recording gear, PA and instruments. The bus, crew and hosts would each serve more then one purpose.

First, should any of the featured bands be missing members, one of the crew could, where required, fill in that spot. But it could also lead to the audience growing to like the hosts; the on the bus antics, the camaraderie, the arguments, the bus breaking down, and the impromptu Jamming and/or song writing that would take place between cities. The bus itself could become somewhat of an icon, being ever visible during shooting by the general public, and also could be deliberately placed into multiple scenes during each show. With today’s technology, it could also be a working music/film recording/editing station where the crew could work on the road, without having to rent facilities in each city. In time, when the Bus would roll into a different city, and be parked next to a bar, it would most likely increase the traffic to that particular venue, with fans and musicians looking to be on TV.

I think the shows appeal would be universal to Music fans, regardless of where you are on the music food chain. Most Musicians I’ve ever met are also fans themselves. Bono and Bruce Springsteen were big fans of Roy Oribison, Travis Tritt Idolized Eric Clapton, and so on and so on… And each of them probably had other heroes, on a local level, who may have helped get them started. That being said, while it’s certainly a show I’d watch, and talk about weekly, I think it’s a show that would get talked about around the office water cooler, in addition to the bars and rehearsal halls. I think it could grow in its appeal almost on an underground level without a huge amount of P.R., but with perhaps a little push in the beginning to get it rolling. You could then attempt to license t-shirts, hats, etc, where struggling musicians, and fans alike might want to support the concept.

And last, but not least… It could serve as a podium against illegal downloading of music, as viewers would gain a new appreciation of how hard musicians actually work.

I believe this is a viable project that could have longevity… if you have any comments, questions, or suggestions.. Please feel free to contact me. Especially if you work for a TV channel and want to pick this project up!!!

Eagles Rocked

Ok.. this is overdue...

Last year in March I caught the Eagles in Montreal along with some good friends of mine...

I'll just have to go on record as saying this....

THE BEST CONCERT I'VE EVER SCENE....

Absolutely Incredible... and no... it wasn't the weed.... (we didnt bring any but there sure was a lot of it (God Bless Montreal) passed around) it was the music... Not special effects... Just the music..

I think what I love about the eagles, is that while they are all Great Musicians... who can Wail! they can also underplay a tune... keep it very basic, and still make it shine like a diamond... they seem to be content, alternately, to take a back seat... Strum basic Chords... to let someone else shine... and/or make the song work as a group.. Individual egos and off stage antics aside, when they are in Concert they are not a "hey look at me" band..... But rather a "lets make this sound really really cool" band.... difficult to do... at least from my limited perspecitive...

My Only dissappointment was that it was my first time seeing the Eagles, and While I know that neither he, or Timothy, or Joe, are "original" members... for me... "my eagles" are not the Eagles without Don Feldar... would have been cool to see Don in the line up . just for my own sense of nostalgia.... (forgive if I've miss-spelled Feldar or nostalgia) but that said.. the Dude they had to fill Feldars spot could REALLY really play... He reminded me of Barry Musseau actually..... if you don't know who Barry is... thats a shame... He's only one of the Best guitarist you've likely never heard, unless your from Port Aux Basques, Nl...

Anyway... I saw Pink Floyd (less Roger Waters) in 87 in Nice... (Momentary Lapse of Reason tour) and I've seen U2... and while each of those were "technically" better concerts.... For me... this Eagles show was the topper.......

Alice Cooper concert was cool

ok.. its 60 year old Alice... but the dudes still got it...

to his credit.. he didnt try to reclaim his youth.. He moved, and acted like a 60 year old dude who can still rock.... and not like a 60 year old pretending to be 20....

And the man does not Curse..... that was Impressive... apparantly, he never has....
there were also a lot of cool local stories of him shopping at the local mall, even golfing at a local course....

Helix, the opening act... well..... I used to love those guys.. and had seen them before.. and to be honest... close your eyes.. and they still sound great... but in contrast to Vinnie's acting his age... these guys were trying a little too hard to "kick it like they used to" but again... Close your eyes.. and man... they sounded great...

the back up singer.... um... could have been Sass Jordans mom... ok.. thats mean of me... I've no right to say that... give credit where credit is due.... She could F__king Sing!!!! Amazing voice actually... .... But, while I won't guess her age... (she was most likely north of 40 to say the least).. I thought her to be a little to "mature" to be still dressing like and 18 punk rocker.. SNo doubt, she's till Got it for her age... but definatly not 18

At first I thought this was odd.... but then I thought... "Maybe its the same back up singer they used int he 80's... and if so... I'll appologize for being an ass.... and give Kudo's to the bands management for not firing her in favor of a lesser singer with a better body.... to many acts do this i think.... I guess it just Business.. there was an Act from Newfoundland that was up and coming in the early 90's... Thomas trio and the Red Albino... they dumped their lady Keyboardist for a lesser tallented, but Considerably HOTTER Chick...... and man... she was HOT... but, not as talented as the former in the music dept.... the band faded out... Im not sure why... maybe it was karma... who knows... but anyway......

that said... I think it would take considerable Guts to Stick to your guns and keep the original singer around.... but again... I'm not even sure thats the case... just one possible scenario I guess...

at the end of the day.. I'm really not Qualified to judge any of these acts... I can't say I've accpomplished anything in music that would entitle me to be a critic.... Im not even a has been, just a wannabe...

But these are the comments we make around the water cooler at work... so on the odd chance that someone has an interest in hearing my 2 cents worth... hear it is....

INXS was dissapointing but Motley Crue was VERY Entertaining....

Well, this is my first "Blog" so I'll keep it short... just to see what happens when I'm done...

We were excited to see INXS tonight.. and whle the show wasn't bad... I was kind of dissappointed... the Sound wasn't the best I've heard at the Metro Centre..but it did get better as the night went on.... and as much as I think its cool the local boy made good... for me... J.D.'s antics were a little over the top.... reminded me of Anna Nicole Smith.. with a the gratuitous self touching....

but oh well.. thats just me... call me an olf fuddy dud....

but then again... no... I'm ok with vulgar.. to a point.. and if thats what you are expecting when you buy your ticket...

Take the Motley Crue concert last month as an example.... ... WAY over the top... and cheesey... but, to be honest... I loved it...

(OK, Im a little Cheesey too.... "Less Artsy... More Fartsy" to quote homer Simpson)

They had serious P.A. trouble... ok, the sound system sucked.... but it was still a great show overall....

Everyone there was a true FAN.. knew all the words of all the songs.. Even the B-side tunes... (for those of you old enough to remember what b-side means) and I got the sense the Band felt that.. Tommy gave a VERY emotional Speech about how appreciative he was of the Crowd...... and promised to come back ..... and then.. of course... was the Ever popular T_TTY cam!!!! Who wouldn't enjoy seeing that... and Who Knew Halifax had such and Abundance of REALLY NICE ONES....

and, well... what can I say.... It was not as classy as Celine, but It was still cool..
Ok the boys are a little past prime.. but man.. they were a kick as band in the day...
And While Vince's voice was not like it was in past Glory days... it was better then I expected especially being some 20 years after my first Motley Crue Record...

I heard in Alberta somewhere Tommy couldnt play... so they aparantly hired the drumer from a Motley Crue Cover band to fill in.... Talk about COOL... I'd do it for FREE!!!! that is If I could play drums.... Heck, I'd be content to be namless back up keyboardist number three for Anyone... From Garth Brooks, and Brad Paisley, to Deep Purple, or even the Saturday Night live House band....

anyway... this blog stuff is new to me... Maybe I'll get better as I do more... or maybe not.....

Cheers for now... ..
